Reflexology

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is an ancient art, a science and a natural therapy.

Whilst the art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, as long ago as 2,330BC, it wasn't until 1913 that Dr William Fitzgerald introduced this therapy to the West as "zone therapy".  He noted that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone.  The East has given the West many insights into how the mind, body and spirit work together to create health.

Over 60 years ago, Eunice Ingham (1889-1974) researched and developed the form of reflexology that the International Institute of Reflexology teaches today. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

How it works:

Reflexology is a complementary therapy, which works on the feet to help heal the whole person not just the  symptoms.

More than 75% of today's diseases are attributable to stress and tension; the body is affected in different ways and varying degrees.  Tension has been described as a tourniquet around the body's system that can lead to serious consequences.

Reflexology is a powerful tool in helping physical, emotional and mental imbalances held within the psyche. It aims to restore well-being and encourage the body to begin its own healing process, therefore helping to improve circulation, cleanse the body of toxins and impurities and boost the immune system; all helping the body to work as efficiently as possible.

Reflexology is a non-invasive, drugless therapy, which is appealing to more and more people.

Reiki Healing

'Reiki' means spiritually guided universal life force energy and is not connected to any belief or religion.  It can be used on children and adults of all ages as well as animals. It is a deeply relaxing process treating the mind, body, spirit and emotions.  Reiki brings harmony, balance and well being to the individual.

Reiki is an ancient system of energy transmission that has been tried and tested for thousands of years and is said to be at least four thousand years old.  It was Dr. Mikao Usui who rediscovered this ancient healing system in the 1870's after many years of searching.  Reiki was  thought to have been lost for  a period of about 400 years, and since its rediscovery, has been taught to selected Masters ever since to continue the Usui System of Natural Healing.

We all use energy every day.  Where does it come from?  Where does it go?  We motivate our energy in everything we do; our thoughts are electrical impulses.  We use chemical energy to empower our body to enable us to physically live each day.

In classroom physics we are taught that energy never dies, it just becomes another form of energy.  An example of this is the chemical energy that can be felt as heat; which is the energy contained within our body motivating our movements.

When the energy that is around us and within us is activated for the purpose of healing, it works with the mind, body, emotions and spiritual energy levels of being.

Reiki energy is activated through the hands of the practitioner and treatment is given through the clothing of the person receiving the healing.  By placing the hands on or above the particular areas related to the energy systems in the body, the transmission of energy is facilitated.  These areas are known as Chakras.  They are located at various points in the body; each one governing different aspects of the vital flow of energy necessary to keep the body functioning healthily.

It is only through the free movement of energy within the body that health is maintained and the potential for disease is minimised.

Body Massage

Everyone needs to relax, to escape the tyranny of time.  Listening to music, watching the movement of clouds, combing the beach for pebbles or shells - these are all ways we use to still the mind, to regain a sense of our own wholeness in the innocence of the moment.  As children we climb trees and run around barefoot. We are at home with ourselves and in touch with our basic nature.  But as we grow older we spend more and more time living purely in our heads.

Massage can provide us with a means to counteract the relentless surge of work and domestic pressures.  For all too many of us, stiffness and pain are a way of life to which we have become habituated, and it is often not until we receive massage that we realise that our muscles are tight, or come to see how much of our energy is consumed by tension.  Massage can be a voyage of self-discovery, revealing how it feels to be more relaxed and in tune with ourselves, to experience the pleasure of a body that can breathe, stand and move freely.

Massage, Past and Present

For thousands of years some form of massage or laying on of hands has been used to heal and soothe the sick.  To the ancient Greek and Roman physicians, massage was one of the principal ways of healing and relieving pain.

In the early fifth century BC, Hippocrates, the "father of medicine," wrote "The physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly in rubbing... For rubbing can bind a joint that is loose and loosen a joint that is too rigid."  After the fall of Rome, little progress was made in Europe in the sphere of medicine and it was left to the East to study and develop the teachings.  In the 19th Century a Swede by the name of Per Henrik Ling developed what is now known as Swedish massage.

Today, the therapeutic value of massage has once more been recognised, and it continues to flourish and develop throughout the Western world, both among lay practitioners and professionals.
